How Would You Like To Learn To Grow Orchids Like a Professional Horticulturists?

My name is Roberta Smothers and I started this website as a resource for others who wish to explore orchids as a hobby and get the most out of caring for these amazing flowering plants. I found a successful method for Orchid Growing, and I want to pass this valuable information on to others. There is much to understand if you want to Grow Orchids in a well planned out way. It is much more than just planting flowers. In the following pages you find out what makes these beautiful flowering plants so unique and special.

Orchids have quickly become one of the most popular flowering plants in homes all around the world. Growing Orchids is extremely interesting for people becauseOrchid Growing Is a Popular Hobby there are about 25,000 species within 880 genera (types) and all of which are perennial. More classifications and hybrids are being added to the long list all the time. They are the second largest flowering plant family in the world second only to the Asteraceae family (Daisies and Sunflowers).

Orchids are the most popular flower of choice in the making of the Hawaiian Leis, which are the decorative wreath of flowers which are graciously presented to visitors when arriving or leaving, as a sign of peace and good will. Wearing the flowers, allows the visitor to have a constant reminder and fragrance of the beauty of the islands.

Orchids are also a favorite flower for weddings. There is a huge market that caters exclusively to providing Orchid arrangements for wedding celebrations and receptions.

Orchids can flourish in almost any climate and region apart from the most harsh with the proper care and preparation. But they are indigenous and most commonly found in Asia, Africa, and South and Central America. Their diverse designs and fragrances have enticed people down through the ages, and it is no wonder that they have spread throughout the world.

The various Orchid species all have different factors which make them unique. In addition, they are easy to grow. But growing the various species makes it necessary to become informed about their peculiarities so that you can best know how to use them in your home or garden.

Orchids; a Microcosm of Individuality

  • Some species only bloom once a year for 2 or 3 months, while others bloom a few times per year, and yet others bloom year round.
  • Some have a sweet fruity fragrance, while others have more of a flowery perfume like smell. Some are very strong smelling, and some are more subtle.
  • Some orchids have only one flower petal, while others have several.
  • Some orchids are self pollinating, while others rely on bees and other insects.
  • The colors of orchid species can vary from violet, to white, yellow, red, or orange.
  • Some orchids thrive in cool weather, while others do well in 90 degree Fahrenheit temperatures.

Ahh... The Sweet Aroma Of Nature's Perfume

Growing Orchids Of Diverse SpeciesOne of the things that make Orchids so special, aside from their obvious beauty, is their fragrant aroma. They have been used for centuries to make perfume, and as recently as this year, a new fragrance was created by breeding two different species. Many even have chocolate, raspberry, lilac, and citrus-like aromas. In fact, the Vanilla plant is a genus of the Orchid family. One of the fine points of Growing Orchids, is combining the appropriate species to create the desired aroma. An entire room or garden can be made to emanate its own unique fragrance.

It is interesting to train your senses to associate a particular scent with the appearance of a certain flower. Something wonderful happens when the mind is able to make that connection between the eyes and one of the other 5 senses. After a while, your memory will cause your mind to vividly experience a scent just by visualizing an Orchid species. Likewise, your minds eye will visualize a beautiful species just by smelling the fragrance wafting through the wind.

We won't get into all of the scientific names and identify all of the species (there are ove 1300), but we will get into general information that you can apply to each of the main types of Orchids.
